Great end to 2017 and a fantastic start to 2018 for one of our Princes Trust participants

Within the training industry, especially on programs dedicated to helping people progress in their chosen careers, is the satisfaction you get when one of those participants works hard to achieve their goal.  Thomas Ayers-Mason is one of those participants that worked hard and showed initiative whilst on such a program.

Prior to applying for The Princes Trust ‘Get Into Administration’ program, Thomas was busy applying for apprenticeships in Business & Administration at various companies around the city.  Thomas says, “I applied for over 90 apprenticeships with very little luck, no interviews and very little response from employers to acknowledge that they had seen my CV or application, it was soul destroying!”.  For many, in the same position as Thomas, find themselves in the same position, applying for roles with very little response or interaction from employers and the training providers advertising the position.

Following on from his attempts to secure an apprenticeship, Thomas was searching around looking for ways in which to improve his chances.  He came across The Princes Trust website and a program called ‘Get Into Administration’.  The ‘Get Into’ programs are designed to help young people from the age of 16 – 25 gain a taste of what it is like to work in different sectors of business from administration through to construction.  They are usually 4 weeks in length and consist of both classroom activities and workplace experience over that period.

Within the Hull area, Airco Centre of Excellence in partnership with various companies around the city, have created a program that suits both the employer and the participant.  Participants attend college for 3 days each week and then spend 2 days putting in to practice what they have learned in the classroom in to the workplace.  This could be anything from just ensuring that they get up on time to meet the requirements of the company to learning how to input information in to bespoke databases unique to the company they are placed with.

Thomas with Paul Hogarth of Merlx Electrical ServicesFor Thomas, who was placed with Merlx Electrical on Williamson Street in Hull, the experience was going to be one which he would thrive and be able to demonstrate his abilities to the employer.  Thomas says “Merlx were absolutely brilliant and I really enjoyed my time with them.  The position was varied and involved lots of contact with customers on the telephones but also filing of invoices and ensuring that the office was left clean and tidy ready to start the next day”.  Merlx were full of praise for the work that Thomas had carried for them.  Chris Fawley, Electrical Services Director at Merlx had this to say about Thomas:

“Tom has been a big help to our small office, he is keen bright and has a extremely can do attitude which has allowed him to settle in quickly and take on a lot of our general admin duties.

Tom has carried out every task we set him with enthusiasm even the mundane tasks he carries out with no fuss, give him a job he does it and right first time appears to be his policy, we have had the confidence to leave tasks with Tom and he has not let us down on anything.

We will miss his cheery can-do approach!”

For Thomas, this had an enormous effect on his confidence.  On the very last day of the program, Thomas was due to present his experiences to his peers and also to his placement provider over the 4 weeks.  Paul Hogarth, of Merlx, attended to show his support for Thomas and also to learn more about the experiences that he had, both in the classroom and also whilst on his work experience.

It was obvious that Thomas had made a huge impact on the staff and directors at Merlx and to see the camaraderie that had grown in such a short space of time between Paul and Thomas, was great to see.  For Merlx, the whole experience had been a positive one and one which they intend to repeat again in March 2018.

Thomas, completed the program in greater spirits than when he started.  He states “The ‘Get Into Administration’ program with Airco made me realise that this is the area that I really wanted to be in.  I really found my passion for administration whilst at Merlx and knew that the experience that I gained would help me with my search for employment”.

Not too long after leaving the ‘Get Into Administration’ program, Thomas’ name came up when we advertised a vacancy for local company, Vent Vision.  They were looking to recruit an administration apprentice for their offices on Sutton Fields in Hull.  As soon as we saw his application, we knew that Thomas would be well suited to Chris Tong and his team.

Thomas working at Vent VisionThomas was one of three applicants that were interviewed by Chris for the position.  Chris says, “Thomas came all suited and booted and first impression were good.  He truly looked the part”.  After interviewing all three candidates, Chris was very quick to snap up Thomas.  “He was just the person we were looking for.  He presented himself well, gave great answers in his interview and most important of all, he is a Hull FC supporter, what more could we want!” says Chris.  Thomas started with Vent Vision on the 2nd  January 2018, and has already begun to make an impact in his new working environment.  Thomas will also begin his learning journey with us, here at the Airco Centre of Excellence and undertake a level 2 Business and Administration apprenticeship.

For Airco Centre of Excellence, this has been a great start for 2018 and one which has helped us, not only to help Thomas, but realise that there are still lots more people in Hull just like Thomas, still searching for that elusive role in administration that they hope will be the start of their careers.  Just like Thomas, they will be applying for numerous vacancies without any response and wondering what they need to do to make their career choice a reality.

Airco Centre of Excellence worked with some great companies in Hull last year: Merlx Electrical, The Humber Bridge, Pure Events Hull and East Riding, Hendersons Insurance, The Spencer Group, Airco Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, Bonus Electrical to name but a few.  We cannot thank our partners enough for helping us create success for the young people that join our ‘Get Into Administration’ program.
